Christ is anointed by a woman. After the Passover supper He establishes Communion. He foretells beforehand that His disciples will be scattered. By Judas’s betrayal Christ is arrested in the garden and is taken to trial. Peter’s denial.

1 Two days later it was the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to seize Him by deceit and kill Him. 2 But they were saying, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.” 3 And while He was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came with an alabaster flask of costly ointment of pure nard. She broke the flask and poured the ointment on His head. 4 The disciples were indignant and said, “Why was this ointment wasted? 5 For this oil could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they were rebuking her. 6 Jesus said to them, “Leave her alone. Why are you causing her trouble? For she did a good work for Me.” 7 You always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do them good, but you do not always have Me with you.” 8 This woman did what she could. beforehand she anointed My body for burial. 9 Truly I tell you, wherever this Gospel is preached in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.” 10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray Jesus to them. 11 When they heard it, they rejoiced and promised to give him money. And Judas was looking for a suitable opportunity to betray Jesus. 12 On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when they were slaughtering the Passover lamb, the disciples said to Him, “Where do You want to eat the Passover meal? will we go and prepare it?” 13 And He sent two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him.” 14 Whichever house he enters, you will say to the master of that house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room where I am to eat the Passover meal with My disciples?”’ 15 And he will show you an upstairs room, large, furnished, and ready. Prepare for us there.” 16 The disciples went out, came into the city, and found it just as Jesus had told them, and they prepared the Passover meal. 17 In the evening He came with the twelve. 18 And as they were reclining at the table and still eating, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, one of you who is eating with Me will betray Me.” 19 They began to be sorrowful and, one after another, to ask Him, “Surely it is not I?” 20 He answered and said to them, “It is one of you twelve, the one who dipped his hand into the bowl with Me. 21 Truly, the Son of Man will go, just as the Holy Scripture says about Him, but woe to that man by whose hand the Son of Man will be betrayed. It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 22 And while they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take, eat. This is My body.” 23 Then taking the cup, He gave thanks and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly I tell you that I will no longer drink from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” 26 And after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 27 Jesus said to them, “This night you will all stumble because of Me, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28 But after My resurrection I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” 29 Peter said to Him, “Even if everyone stumbles, I will not stumble.” 30 Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, today, this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” 31 But Peter insisted more and more and was saying, “Even if it is necessary to die with You, I will not deny You.” And they all were saying the same. 32 They came to the garden called Gethsemane. He said to His disciples, “Sit here until I pray.” 33 And He took Peter, James, and John with Him. He began to be sorrowful and distressed. 34 And He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to death. Stay here and keep watch.” 35 Then going a little farther, He fell face down on the ground and was praying that, if it were possible, that hour might pass away from Him. 36 And He was saying, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me, but not as I will, but as You will.” 37 And He came and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not stay awake for one hour? 38 Stay awake and pray, so that you do not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 And again He went away and prayed, saying the same words. 40 And returning, He again found them sleeping, because their eyes had become heavy, and they did not know what to answer Him. 41 He came the third time and said to them, “From now on, sleep and rest, for the end has come. The hour has come, and now, the Son of Man is being handed over into the hands of sinners.” 42 Get up, let us go. Look, the one who betrays Me has come near.” 43 While Jesus was speaking these things, Judas Iscariot came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. 44 Now the one betraying Him had given them a sign, saying, “The One I kiss is He. Seize Him and lead Him away with caution.” 45 And coming, he immediately went up to Him and said, “Rabbi, Rabbi,” and kissed Him. 46 They laid hands on Him and arrested Him. 47 Then one of those standing around drew his sword, struck the High Priest’s servant, and cut off his ear. 48 Jesus addressed them and said, “Have you come out against Me with swords and clubs, as against a robber, to arrest Me?” 49 I was always with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not arrest Me. But all this happened so that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.” 50 And they all left Him and fled. 51 And a young man was following Him, with a linen cloth thrown over his naked body, and the young men seized him. 52 But he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked. 53 They led Jesus Christ to Caiaphas the High Priest, where all the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders began to gather. 54 Peter, following Jesus from a distance, went in even into the courtyard of the High Priest. He was sitting with the servants and warming himself by the fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking testimony against Jesus, in order to put Him to death, but they were not finding any. 56 For many were giving false testimony against Him, but their testimonies did not agree with one another. 57 Some stood up and gave false testimony against Him, saying, 58 “We heard him saying, ‘I will tear down this temple made by hands, and in three days I will build another, not made by hands.’” 59 But even so, their testimony was not consistent. 60 Then the High Priest stood up in the middle and questioned Jesus, saying, “Do You answer nothing? What is it that they testify against You?” 61 But He remained silent and gave no answer. The High Priest questioned Him again and said, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the blessed God?” 62 Jesus said, “Yes, as you said, I am. And you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 The High Priest tore his garment and said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64 You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” And they all condemned Him, deciding that He is deserving of death. 65 Some began to spit in His face, to pull a covering over His head, to strike Him with their fists, and to say, “Prophesy to us, You Christ, who is it that struck You?” And the servants were also slapping Him. 66 While Peter was still below in the courtyard, one of the High Priest’s servant girls came. 67 and seeing that he was warming himself, she looked at him closely and said, “You also were with Jesus of Nazareth.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I do not know and I do not understand what you are saying.” And he went out into the courtyard, and the rooster crowed. 69 The servant girl saw him again and began to say to those standing nearby, “This one is also one of them.” 70 He denied again. A little later those standing nearby again said to Peter, “Truly you are one of them, because you are a Galilean, and your speech is like theirs as well”. 71 He began to curse and swear, “I do not know that man you are talking about.” 72 And the rooster crowed a second time. Peter remembered the word that Jesus had said to him: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And he began to weep.
