This verse sorrowfully fulfills the prophecy spoken a little earlier: the Shepherd was struck and the sheep were scattered (Zechariah 13:7, Mark 14:27). The disciples, who had promised not to leave Him, now abandon Him and flee. This reveals human weakness in the moment of danger. Yet their flight was not a final rejection, but a bitter fall from which, after Christ’s resurrection, they would be restored (Mark 14:28, 16:7). This word humbles the believer: we must recognize the truth that without God’s preserving grace, even the warmest promises can collapse. Christ remained alone so that He would never leave His people alone.
