The woman’s act of love seemed like waste in the eyes of some. This shows that worldly thinking, or a cooled religious mindset, often does not understand the abundance of love toward Christ. What the believing heart offers as worship, the calculating heart may call a loss. They were weighing the oil’s material value, but they did not see Christ’s priceless worthiness. This verse warns that when love grows scarce, a person begins to judge another’s devotion as excess. Yet nothing given to Christ is lost, if it is given with pure love and faith.
