They led Jesus Christ to Caiaphas the High Priest, where all the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders began to gather.
Christ was led before the religious authority, where justice and reverence for God’s law ought to have ruled, but in reality the will to condemn Him had already been formed. The High Priest, the scribes, and the elders were gathering not to examine the truth, but to prepare a verdict against Jesus. This reveals how easily even a holy calling and authority can be turned aside from their purpose when a person’s heart rejects the Son of God. The Lord stands before an unjust human court so that sinful people may be justified before God. His unjust trial becomes part of the path of our justification.
