And He sent two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him.”
Christ shows His complete knowledge and authority over events. He tells in detail what sign the disciples will see in the city. The man carrying a jar of water becomes a sign of God’s providence—simple, yet definite guidance. As His sufferings draw near, the Lord is not a helpless victim, but the Lord who knows and governs all things. He prepares His Passover with the same authority with which He goes toward the cross. This teaches the believer that in God’s work even the smallest details can be directed by His will.
