This short statement is weighty in its simplicity. Sinful people raise their hands against the Son of God and arrest Him. He by whose word the created things exist allows Himself to be seized. This is not His inability, but voluntary humility. If He had willed it, He could have escaped, but perfect obedience to the Father’s will and love toward those being saved kept Him on that path. The seizing of Christ was the beginning of our freedom: He was bound so that those in the bonds of sin might be set free.
