And as they were reclining at the table and still eating, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, one of you who is eating with Me will betray Me.”
Christ’s words sound with great sorrow. The betrayer was not a distant enemy, but a table companion. The phrase “eats with Me” reveals the mercilessness of the betrayal, because being a table companion was a sign of fellowship and trust. The Lord says, “Truly I tell you,” so that the disciples may understand the weight of His words. He does not expose Judas immediately before everyone, but gives a final warning to the conscience. Christ knew of the betrayal, yet to the end He showed patience and righteousness.
