Christ describes the betrayer with the image of table fellowship. Putting one’s hand into the same bowl shows closeness, trust, and an outward sign of friendship. The sin of betrayal is even heavier when it is committed in the light of received love and grace. Judas had not only heard Christ, but had also shared His table. This word reminds us that outward participation in holy things can become condemnation if the heart remains unrepentant and false. Nearness to God’s gifts requires faithfulness, not merely formal presence.
