For many were giving false testimony against Him, but their testimonies did not agree with one another.
A lie is unstable in itself. Many were giving testimony, but their words contradicted one another, because the truth is one, while a lie is divided and contradictory. This is also a sign of God’s providence even in the darkness of judgment: Christ’s enemies cannot even make their lie consistent. The Lord stands silent, and their falsehoods expose themselves. This verse teaches that an accusation built against the truth eventually collapses from within, even though for a time it may serve the aims of unjust people.
