But He remained silent and gave no answer. The High Priest questioned Him again and said, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the blessed God?”
Christ remains silent before false accusations, but when the matter concerns the true testimony about His own person, He must answer. The High Priest’s question is direct: is He the Messiah, the Son of God? The expression “the Son of the Blessed God” was a reverent way of speaking about God. At this moment Christ is standing before Israel’s highest religious authority and must give open testimony about who He is. As we will see next, He does not avoid the truth, even though He knows that this word will be used against Him.
