And He took Peter, James, and John with Him. He began to be sorrowful and distressed.
Christ takes with Him Peter, James, and John, those three disciples who had previously seen the revelation of His divine glory on the mountain at the Transfiguration. Now they are called to see His humble sorrow in Gethsemane. This shows that Christ’s glory and suffering are inseparable within His saving path. The words “He began to be sorrowful and troubled” reveal His true human nature: He entered human pain, grief, and the heavy inner struggle not in appearance, but in truth. His sorrow was not cowardice, but a deep awareness of the burden of sin, God’s righteous judgment, and the weight of the approaching cross. Here the believer sees the Savior, who was to suffer not only in body, but also in soul to bear the weight of our salvation. Christ’s sorrow is the source of our comfort, because He truly entered the depths of human pain and is compassionate toward our weaknesses.
