The parables of the sower, the seed growing secretly, and the mustard seed. Christ calms the storm on the sea.

1 And again He began to teach by the lakeshore. And a very great crowd gathered around Him, so that He got into a boat and sat on the lake, while the whole crowd was on the land by the lakeshore. 2 And with parables He was teaching them many things, and in His teaching He was saying to them. 3 “Listen. now, the sower went out to sow. 4 And it happened that as he was sowing, some of the seed fell by the roadside, and the birds came and ate it. 5 And another part fell on rocky ground, where there was not much soil, and it sprang up at once, because the soil was not deep. 6 And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and because it had no root, it withered. 7 And another part fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it did not bear fruit. 8 And another part fell into good soil and bore fruit, which sprang up and grew and yielded, one thirty, one sixty, and one a hundred. 9 And He was saying to them, “Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.” 10 When He was alone, those around Him with the disciples were asking Him about the parable. 11 Jesus said to them, “To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but for those who are outside, everything will be in parables. 12 So that ‘Even though they look, they will not see. even though they hear, they will not understand.. so that they will not turn back, and it be forgiven them’ (Isa. 6:9-10).” 13 And He said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand all the other parables?” 14 The sower sows the word of God. 15 Those sown along the roadside are the ones in whom the word is sown, but when they hear the word, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts. 16 Likewise, those sown on rocky places are the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy. 17 But they have no root in themselves and are temporary. Then, when trouble or persecution arises because of the word, they immediately stumble. 18 Those sown among thorns are those who hear the word, 19 And the cares of this world and the deceptions of riches and the other desires, entering in, choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 20 But those sown in the good soil are the ones who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: one yields thirty, another sixty, and another a hundred.” 21 And He said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket or under a bed? Is it not meant to be put on the lampstand?” 22 For there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing secret has been that will not come to light. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” 24 Then He said to them, “Pay careful attention to what you hear. More will be given to you who hear. With whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you.” 25 For whoever has, to him it will be given, and whoever does not have, from him even what he has will be taken away.” 26 And He was saying, “The kingdom of God is like this: as when a man casts seed into the ground. 27 And whether he sleeps or rises, night or day, the seeds will sprout and grow, and he does not know how, 28 for the earth bears fruit by itself: first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29 And when the fruit ripens, immediately he sends in the sickle, because the time of harvest has come.” 30 And He said, “To what will we compare the kingdom of God, or with what parable will we present it?” 31 It is like a mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the ground, is smaller than all the seeds on the earth. 32 But when it is sown, it grows and becomes the greatest of all the garden plants and puts out great branches, so that the birds of the sky can nest under its shade.” 33 Jesus was teaching them the word with such parables, so that they could listen. 34 And He did not speak to them without a parable, but in private He explained everything to His disciples. 35 And on that same day, when evening came, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side of the lake.” 36 The disciples left the crowd and took Jesus with them, and they departed in a boat. Other boats were also accompanying them. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were pouring into the boat, so that the boat was already filling up. 38 And He was asleep in the back of the boat on a cushion. And they woke Him and said, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” 39 Waking up, Jesus rebuked the wind and said to the lake, “Be still, be silent.” The wind stopped, and there was complete calm. 40 And He said to them, “Why were you so fearful? Do you still have no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and were saying to one another, “Who then is This, that both the wind and the lake obey Him?”
