Christ again returns to the theme of hearing. This shows how foundational hearing is in spiritual life. Hearing here is not only perceiving a sound. It includes attention, receiving, keeping, and doing. When the Lord repeats the same call again, it is as if He is saying that the whole fruit of the parables and words depends on the condition of the listener’s heart. Every person who considers himself a hearer of the Gospel must ask whether he truly hears. This word also shows that hearing is a gift that must not be despised. If a person uses this gift with humility, he will receive more light; if he neglects it, he may lose even what he seems to have.
