Waking up, Jesus rebuked the wind and said to the lake, “Be still, be silent.” The wind stopped, and there was complete calm.
This verse is the climax of the story. Christ rises, not praying as one who expects authority from elsewhere, but rebuking the wind and commanding the sea. His word is directed to the forces of nature, and they obey Him. The command “Be silent, stop” shows absolute authority. And immediately the wind ceases and there is a great calm. This is not only a miracle, but a revelation. It unveils who the Man sleeping in that boat is. He is the Lord to whom the sea and the wind submit. Even the created world recognizes the voice of its Creator. In a spiritual sense, this is also a comfort for believers. The Christ who can calm the storm of nature with a single word can also bring peace into human fear, turmoil, and a restless heart.
