But they have no root in themselves and are temporary. Then, when trouble or persecution arises because of the word, they immediately stumble.
In these verses Christ reveals the condition of those who hear the word and receive it with joy, yet it does not reach the depths of their heart. Their faith is based on an emotional response, not on inner change and being rooted. For that reason it is temporary. As long as the Gospel does not bring hardship, they are ready to accept it, but when trouble or persecution arises because of the word, their true condition is revealed and they stumble. Here it is seen that the trial does not create their instability, but exposes it. Christ shows that true faith requires depth and steadfastness, so that a person can remain standing not only in joy, but also in pain and opposition.
