It is like a mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the ground, is smaller than all the seeds on the earth.
With the image of the mustard seed, Christ shows the humble and almost unnoticed beginning of the kingdom of God. Outwardly it seems insignificant and weak, like the tiny mustard seed. In the same way, the beginning of Christ’s ministry, by worldly standards, had no greatness or glory: a group of ordinary disciples and a teacher who came from Galilee. Yet this smallness is not a sign of weakness, but God’s way of working. As commentators note, the emphasis here is not only on the seed’s smallness, but on the contrast between the beginning and the final outcome. The kingdom of God begins in an unseen and often undervalued way, but it carries within itself a divine power that will certainly grow and be made manifest. This also corrects human false standards that judge by outward greatness. The believer should not be discouraged by small beginnings, because God’s work is not determined by the size of the start, but by the power of life at work within it.
