And He said, “To what will we compare the kingdom of God, or with what parable will we present it?”
This question shows that the kingdom of God is such a rich reality that it requires different images in order to reveal its different aspects. Christ is not limited to one parable, because the kingdom is at the same time growth, hidden power, light, judgment, fruitfulness, and a victorious end. His question has a teaching force. He draws the listeners into thinking, as though searching together with them for the most fitting image. This too is a sign of His divine humility and wisdom. He not only declares the truth, but also moves people’s minds toward it.
