And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and because it had no root, it withered.
The sun here is, on the one hand, a natural phenomenon in the parable, and on the other hand it has a symbolic meaning. What can be beneficial for a living plant becomes destructive for one that has no root. In the same way, hardship, testing, persecution, or spiritual struggle reveal whether there is a true root within a person. When faith was only outward, emotional, or temporary, intense testing quickly brings it to the surface. What matters here is not that the sun is bad, but that the plant had no depth. Likewise, difficulties often do not create our spiritual emptiness, but reveal it. If a person has not taken root in Christ, then in the moment of pressure he easily grows weak and withers. This urges us not to be satisfied with outward piety, but to seek a faith established deep in the heart.
