And He said to them, “Why were you so fearful? Do you still have no faith?”
After the storm had ceased, Christ addresses not the elements, but the heart of the disciples. Their main problem was not only the outward danger, but the lack of faith. He does not say that the storm was not real, but asks why they are so fearful. When the Lord was with them in the boat, they should not have fallen into such despair, as though everything were finished. This word applies to everyone. Often people see the waves more clearly than the presence of Jesus. Yet true faith is not the absence of danger, but trust in the Lord’s presence, even under danger. Christ’s question is a rebuke, but also instruction. He teaches the disciples that their eyes must look more to Him than to the storm.
