1 And from there He rose up and came to the borders of Judea, to the other side of the Jordan. And again crowds gathered to Him, and again, according to His custom, He was teaching them. 2 And the Pharisees came up to Him, and testing Him they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” 3 He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 They said, “Moses permitted us to write a certificate of divorce and to divorce.” 5 Jesus answered and said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you that commandment. 6 But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female. 7 Therefore a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife. 8 And the two will be one flesh. Therefore they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.” 10 And in the house His disciples again asked Him about that. 11 And He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery. 12 Likewise, if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.” 13 And they were bringing little children to Him, so that He might lay His hand on them, but the disciples were rebuking those who were bringing them. 14 Jesus, seeing it, was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to Me and do not hinder them, because the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter into it.” 16 And embracing them, He laid His hands on them and blessed them. 17 As Jesus set out on the road from there, now, a rich man ran up, knelt down, asked Him, and said, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except One, God.” 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father and mother’ (Exodus 20:14, 13, 15-16, 12. Deuteronomy 5:17-20, 16).” 20 He answered and said to Him, “Teacher, I have done all these things from my youth. now what do I still lack?” 21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You lack one thing. If you want to be perfect, go, sell everything you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasures in heaven. Then take up the cross and follow Me.” 22 But he was saddened by that word and went away sorrowful, because he had great possessions. 23 And Jesus, looking around, said to His disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God.” 24 The disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus continued speaking with them and said, “Children, how hard it is for those who have put their hope in riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 The disciples were even more astonished and were saying to one another, “Then who can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at them and said, “For people this is impossible, but not for God, because for God all things are possible.” 28 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Look, we left everything and followed You.” 29 Jesus answered and said, “Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or children, or fields for My sake or for the sake of the Gospel 30 and now, in this time, does not receive a hundredfold—houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, fields—certainly bearing persecutions, and in the coming age, eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.” 32 They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem. Jesus was going ahead of them, and those who were following Him were amazed and afraid. Jesus, taking the twelve aside again, began to tell them what events were going to happen to Him. 33 “now, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the High Priest and the scribes, and they will condemn Him to death and hand Him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will mock Him, and scourge Him, and spit on Him, and kill Him, and on the third day He will rise again.” 35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to Him and said, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we are going to ask of You.” 36 He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 37 They said to Him, “Grant us that in Your glory we may sit, one at Your right hand and the other at Your left.” 38 Jesus answered them and said, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am going to drink, or be baptized with the baptism with which I am going to be baptized?” 39 They said to Him, “We can.” Jesus said to them, “The cup that I am going to drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am going to be baptized you will be baptized, 40 but to seat at My right and at My left is not Mine to give, but it will be given to those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 When the other ten disciples heard it, they began to be angry with James and John. 42 Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that among the Gentiles those who are considered rulers lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it must not be so among you. Rather, whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant. 44 And whoever wants to be first among you, let him be the servant of all. 45 For the Son of Man Himself did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” 46 And they came to Jericho. As He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, Bartimaeus the blind man, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 And hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth passing by, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me”. 48 Many were rebuking him to be silent, but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me”. 49 Jesus stopped and commanded that they call him. And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take courage, get up, He is calling you.” 50 He, throwing aside his cloak, stood up and came to Jesus. 51 Jesus answered and said to him, “What do you want Me to do for you?” The blind man said to Him, “Teacher, that I may see.” 52 Jesus said to him, “Go, your faith has saved you.” Immediately his eyes were opened, and on the road he was following Jesus.
