He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?”
The Lord’s question is revealing. He knows the desire of their hearts, but He wants them to express it with their mouths. Often the true nature of our requests becomes clear precisely when we are forced to state them plainly before God. Christ does not reject them at once, but allows what is in the heart to come out and be corrected by the truth. This question is also addressed to us: what do we truly want from Christ—the doing of His will, or the confirmation of our ambition?
