Then Peter said to Jesus, “Look, we left everything and followed You.”
Peter’s words arise from the contrast he saw between the rich man and themselves. The rich man could not leave his possessions, but they had left their livelihood, the comforts of family, and their former way of life in order to follow Christ. Yet in Peter’s words there is also the breath of a question about reward. He seems to want to know what value their renunciation has. The Lord does not rebuke him harshly, but answers by showing that the sacrifice made for Christ does not go unnoticed. However, that reward must be understood not as worldly profit, but in the light of divine grace.
