Christ very clearly foretells the stages of His coming sufferings. He will be handed over to the religious leaders, who should have recognized the Messiah, but will condemn Him to death. Then they will hand Him over to the Gentiles, because the Roman authority was the one to carry out the execution. This word reveals the universal participation of human sin: both the Jewish leaders and the Gentile authority become involved in the rejection of the Son of God. Yet all this happens not outside God’s will, but within the mystery of the plan of salvation. People act with evil, and God, through these events, accomplishes the mystery of salvation.
