It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
This is an exceedingly strong image by which the Lord reveals the tragic weight of a heart bound to wealth. The camel is a large animal, and the eye of a needle is one of the smallest openings. In this way the Lord shows that the self-confidence of a rich man’s heart and his attachment to his own possessions are so heavy that by his own strength he cannot enter the kingdom of God. If the heart is great and heavy with an earthly burden, it cannot pass through the narrow door of humility. This word is a call to wakefulness directed not only to the rich, but to all who carry a burden upon their soul and do not want to let it go for Christ.
