With this saying the Lord applies the same moral standard also to the woman. Before God’s law, marital faithfulness is a two-sided obligation. Christ does not allow sin to be evaluated on the basis of sex, legal custom, or social privilege. The marriage covenant binds both the man and the woman. This saying also shows that in the Lord’s kingdom moral truth does not change according to human circumstances. The holy union requires holy faithfulness from both sides.
