But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”
This saying warns against judging by outward standards. Those who now seem to be first—by wealth, position, religious authority, or self-confidence—may, in God’s judgment, be found among the last. And those who are insignificant in the world, poor, persecuted, or humble may be raised up in the kingdom. The Lord also warns the disciples themselves, so that because of what they have left behind or because of their service they do not fall into pride. The order of God’s kingdom is often the opposite of the order of the world; there greatness is measured not by outward glory, but by humility, faithfulness, and relying on the grace of God.
