And hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth passing by, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me”.
Bartimaeus was physically blind, but spiritually he saw what many who could see did not see. He calls Jesus “Son of David,” that is, he recognizes His messianic dignity. His cry is short, but full of faith: “have mercy on me.” He does not present merits, he does not bring long explanations, but places all his hope in the Lord’s mercy. This is an example of true prayer. When a person recognizes his wretchedness and the power of Christ, a simple and powerful prayer is born from his mouth.
