Christ foretells in advance the destruction of the Temple, Jerusalem, and Judea: He commands to remain watchful.

1 As Jesus came out of the temple and was going on his way, the disciples came up to show him the buildings of the temple. 2 Jesus answered and said to them, “Do you see all these things? Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left upon another that will not be torn down.” 3 While he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately and said, “Tell us, when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the world?” 4 Jesus answered and said to them, “Be careful that no one deceives you, 5 For many will come in My name and will say, “I am the Christ,” and they will mislead many. 6 You will hear the sounds of wars and reports of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for all these things must happen, but it is not yet the end. 7 Nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines and deaths and earthquakes in various places. 8 But all this is the beginning of birth pains. 9 Then they will hand you over to affliction and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. 10 And at that time many will stumble, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 And many false prophets will arise and will lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will increase, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 And this Gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the Gentiles, and then the end will come. 15 So when you see “the abomination of desolation,” spoken of through the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the one who reads understand), 16 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, 17 whoever is on the roof, let him not go down to take anything out of the house, 18 and the one who is in the field must not turn back to take his clothes. 19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing in those days. 20 Pray that your flight will not be in winter, nor on the Sabbath day. 21 For at that time there will be such great tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, and never will be. 22 And if those days were not shortened, no one would be saved. but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. 23 At that time, if someone tells you, “Look, Christ is here,” or “There,” do not believe it. 24 For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 Look, I have told you beforehand. 26 So if they say to you, “Look, he is in the wilderness,” do not go out, or, “Look, he is in the inner rooms,” do not believe it. 27 For just as the lightning comes out from the east and is seen as far as the west, so also will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28 Where the corpse is, the eagles gather there. 29 Immediately after those days of tribulation, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven. And then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven (Dan. 7:13, Matt. 26:64b), with power and great glory. 31 And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his chosen ones from the four directions, from one end of heaven to the other end. 32 Learn from the parable of the fig tree: when its branches have already become tender and the leaf has sprouted, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that the Son of Man is near, at the doors. 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things happen. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. 36 But concerning that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 Just as the days of Noah were, so also will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For just as it was in the days before the flood, when they were eating and drinking, marrying and being given in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, 39 and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away. so will the coming of the Son of Man be. 40 At that time two people will be in the field: one will be taken, and the other will be left. 41 If two women are grinding at a mill, one will be taken, and the other will be left. 42 Therefore stay awake, because you do not know at what hour your Lord will come. 43 But know this: if the master of the house knew at what hour the thief was coming, he would keep watch and would not allow his house to be broken into. 44 So you also be ready, because the Son of Man will come at a time when you do not expect him. 45 Who then is that faithful and wise servant, whom his lord appointed over the servants, to give them food at the proper time? 46 Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find doing so. 47 Truly I tell you, he will appoint him over all his possessions. 48 But if that servant is evil and says in his heart, “My lord is delaying,” 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with drunkards, 50 that servant’s lord will come on a day when he does not expect him, and at an hour when he is not aware, 51 and he will cut him in two and will put his portion with the hypocrites.
