With these words Jesus concludes the story of the evil servant, showing the end of unpreparedness and hypocrisy. The phrase “will cut him in two” symbolizes a complete separation from the Lord’s presence—not merely physical death, but a spiritual severing from the source of life. This is a condition in which a person can no longer correct his mistake, because the time has come to an end. “The portion of the hypocrites” means the place of those who appeared outwardly to be believers, but in their hearts were far from God. The weeping and gnashing of teeth portray spiritual anguish, when a person realizes the salvation that has been lost. Jesus’ word is at the same time a sentence and a warning: every servant is called to live in faithfulness, otherwise even a granted service can become a cause for judgment. That is, what was meant to serve salvation can become an accusation, if it has been neglected or used selfishly.
