whoever is on the roof, let him not go down to take anything out of the house,
Jesus, continuing his discourse here, shows the urgency of salvation: to act with speed and decisiveness. When danger comes, the believer must not waste time with the things of the world, but must flee at once, not looking back and not seeking what was lost. The image of being “on the housetop” symbolizes an elevated position from which a person sees the danger and can act without delay. This saying also recalls the story of Lot (Genesis 19:17), when he was commanded not to look back. Christ teaches that spiritual salvation requires complete renunciation of worldly ties. Indeed, this word was fulfilled historically in the days of the siege of Jerusalem, when the one who listened and did not hesitate was saved, yet it remains powerfully alive even today as an exhortation not to cling to the past when God calls toward salvation.
