Just as the days of Noah were, so also will be the coming of the Son of Man.
Jesus, using the example of the days of Noah, explains the spiritual condition that will precede his second coming. In Noah’s time people lived their everyday lives—eating, drinking, marrying—and were careless toward the approaching judgment. In the same way it will be before the coming of the Son of Man: people will continue living ordinary life without noticing that divine judgment is near. This comparison shows that the end of the world will come not because of an unexpected event, but in the midst of a numbed humanity that does not perceive the spiritual danger. Christ’s word is a call to remain constantly watchful, not to be led astray by the world’s indifference, and not to perish like the people of Noah’s generation who despised the warnings.
