For just as the lightning comes out from the east and is seen as far as the west, so also will be the coming of the Son of Man.
With these words Jesus explains that his second coming will be instantaneous, open, and universal, therefore neither secret nor limited to a certain area. The image of “lightning” symbolizes the powerful revelation of heavenly glory, which the whole world will see at the same time. By this he shows with what characteristics the Son of Man will appear, in contrast to false, deceptive messiahs. Christ clearly shows that his coming will not be an event organized by people, but a divine manifestation that surpasses the limits of time and space. This word reminds believers to remain ready, to live with ever-watchful faith, because the coming of the Son of Man will be sudden, like the light of lightning that in an instant illuminates the sky.
