Matthew 24:32

Learn from the parable of the fig tree: when its branches have already become tender and the leaf has sprouted, you know that summer is near.

In this saying, Jesus gives the example of the fig tree’s natural process in order to explain the principle of spiritual awakening. Just as the tree’s branches becoming tender and the new leaves sprouting are a sign that summer is near, so believers must discern that when the signs spoken by Jesus take place, it means the Lord’s coming is near. This thought is a call to be attentive, to watch with alertness the signs of the times, and to understand their meaning. Jesus teaches that just as nature signals a change of season, so also in the spiritual realm there are signs that testify to the fulfillment of God’s plan. This reminds us that the believer must have spiritual sensitivity to recognize the times and, with a prepared heart, must wait for the Lord’s appearing.
