At that time two people will be in the field: one will be taken, and the other will be left.
In this verse Jesus shows the decisive separation that will take place at the coming of the Son of Man. Two people, whose inner conditions will be different, may be in the same place, doing the same work, and living under the same outward circumstances. “One will be taken” as a person who is spiritually awake and ready, and “the other will be left” because he lives in an indifferent or unprepared state. With this image Jesus emphasizes that judgment will not be based on outward activity, social status, or closeness between people, but on the true posture of the heart and on faith. Salvation is presented here as a strictly personal responsibility: no one can rely on another person’s faith or simply be in the “right environment.” Christ’s word is a call for each person to be watchful personally, to live by faith, and to be ready, so that the Lord’s coming does not become a moment of being left behind, but of being received.
