The murder of John the Baptist. The miracles of Christ.

1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about Jesus’ fame 2 And he said to his servants, “He is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead, and that is why miracles are being done through him.” 3 For Herod had seized John, bound him, and thrown him into prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, 4 For John was telling him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” 5 And he wanted to kill him, but he was afraid of the people, because the people accepted John as a prophet. 6 But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced during the feast, and it pleased Herod. 7 And with an oath he promised to give the girl whatever she asked. 8 And she, having been instructed beforehand by her mother, said, “Give me here, on a platter, the head of John the Baptist.” 9 And the king was grieved, but because of his oaths and his table companions, he commanded that it be given to her. 10 And he sent men and had John beheaded in the prison. 11 They brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and she took it to her mother. 12 Then his disciples came, took John’s body and buried it, and then they came and told Jesus. 13 When Jesus heard that, he withdrew from there by boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14 Jesus, coming ashore, saw a great crowd, had compassion on them, and healed their sick. 15 And when evening came, the disciples came to Him and said, “This place is deserted, and the time has already passed. Send the crowds away, so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves”. 16 Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away. You give them something to eat.” 17 They also said to Jesus, “We have nothing here except five loaves and two fish.” 18 And he said, “Bring them here to me.” 19 And he ordered the people to sit down on the grass. And he took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, blessed, broke them into pieces, gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the people. 20 And they all ate and were satisfied, and they gathered the remaining pieces, twelve baskets full. 21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting the women and the children. 22 Jesus immediately compelled his disciples to get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side of the lake, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he dismissed the crowd, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. And when evening came, Jesus was there alone. 24 But the boat was already in the middle of the sea, being battered by the waves, because the wind was against it. 25 In the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled and said, “It is a ghost,” and they cried out in fear. 27 And Jesus immediately spoke with them and said, “Take courage, it is I. Do not be afraid”. 28 And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water”. 29 And he said, “Come.” And Peter, getting down from the boat, walked on the waters in order to come to Jesus. 30 And when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid. and as he began to sink, he cried out and said, “Lord, save me!” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand, took hold of him, and said, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind calmed down. 33 And those who were in the boat worshiped Him and said, “Truly You are the Son of God.” 34 And when they had crossed to the other side of the lake, they came to the region of Gennesaret. 35 When the people of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word throughout the whole surrounding region, and they brought all the sick to him. 36 And they were begging him that they might at least touch the edge of his garment, and all who touched were healed.
