When Jesus heard that, he withdrew from there by boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard, they followed him on foot from the towns.
In this passage Jesus hears about the death of John the Baptist and goes to a secluded place, likely in order to mourn, to pray, or to be alone with His disciples. This shows His human side: compassion, sorrow, inner quietness. But the people, sensing their need for His presence, go on foot without delay to seek Him. This speaks of a deep longing and trust toward Jesus.
