Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away. You give them something to eat.”
Jesus’ answer is direct, yet deep and unexpected. He does not accept the disciples’ suggestion to send the people away. Instead, he instructs them to feed the crowd. This is not a simple suggestion, but a test of faith. Jesus requires the disciples to begin acting, despite the limits of their resources. He reminds them that the real solution is not in their hands, yet through their faith and obedience God’s power can be revealed. This verse also reminds us that when God requires something, he is also ready to provide the necessary means. What remains for us is to listen and obey, even without having any idea about the next steps.
