Jesus immediately reached out his hand, took hold of him, and said, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
In this saying, Jesus’ mercy and His disciplining rebuke are seen at the same time. He immediately stretches out His hand, showing that God’s help does not delay when a person is sinking into fear. Peter’s rescue comes before the rebuke, which reveals divine love: the Lord first saves, then teaches. The title “one of little faith” shows that the problem was not the absence of faith, but its wavering. Peter stepped out of the boat in faith, but he was diverted by fear, shifting his gaze from Jesus to the storm. The question “Why did you doubt?” is not a verdict, but a spiritual mirror, to show that faith works only when the focus is on Christ, not on circumstances. This episode teaches that even in the moment of falling, the believer does not lose the Lord’s saving hand that reaches him, if he cries out to Him.
