And he said, “Come.” And Peter, getting down from the boat, walked on the waters in order to come to Jesus.
Jesus’ one word, “Come,” contains at the same time a command, power, and an invitation. When the Lord says, “Come,” within that word the possibility is already included to do what seems impossible to a person. Peter does not ask how he will walk on the water, he does not demand an explanation or a guarantee, but obeys the voice. His faith becomes action, and that action begins with the first step. He leaves the boat, the symbol of human security, and goes out into the storm with one purpose: to reach Jesus. Here faith is not directed toward the miracle, but toward Jesus. Peter does not walk on the water as an end in itself, but in response to Christ’s call. The miracle begins at the very moment he steps down from the boat, because as long as a person remains within the boundaries of human safety, faith cannot fully operate.
