The rulers plot to kill Christ. A woman anoints Him. Judas betrays Christ. Jesus eats the Passover meal and institutes Holy Communion. He prays in the garden, is arrested, and is taken to Caiaphas. Peter denies Christ three times.

1 When Jesus finished all these words, he said to his disciples. 2 “You know that after two days it is Passover, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.” 3 At that time the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people gathered in the courtyard of the high priest named Caiaphas 4 and they conferred together, so that by deceit they might seize Jesus and kill him. 5 But they were saying, “Not during the feast, so that there may not be an uproar among the people.” 6 While Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, 7 A woman came up to him, having with her a very costly oil in an alabaster flask. And while Jesus was reclining at the table, she poured the oil on his head. 8 When the disciples saw it, they were indignant and said, “Why was this oil wasted?” 9 because this oil could have been sold for a high price and given to the poor.” 10 Jesus, knowing this, said to them: "Why are you troubling this woman? For she has done a good work for me." 11 You always have the poor with you, but you will not always have Me with you. 12 By pouring that oil on my body, she prepared me for burial. 13 Truly I tell you, wherever this Gospel is preached in the whole world, what she did will also be told in memory of her.” 14 Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 And he said, “What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?” And they paid him thirty silver coins. 16 After that he was looking for a suitable opportunity to betray Jesus. 17 On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to prepare the Passover meal for you?” 18 Jesus said to them, “Go into the city to a certain man, and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My time is near. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” 19 The disciples did as Jesus had instructed them, and they prepared the Passover meal. 20 When evening came, Jesus sat at the table with the twelve disciples. 21 And while they were eating, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you that one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples became deeply grieved, and began to ask Him one by one, “Surely it is not I, Lord?” 23 He answered and said, “The one who dipped his hand in the dish with me is the one who will betray me.” 24 The Son of Man is going as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whose hand the Son of Man will be betrayed. It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 25 Judas, who was going to betray him, addressed Jesus and said, “Surely it is not I, Teacher?” He said to him, “You have said it.” 26 While they were eating, Jesus took the bread, blessed it, broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat. this is my body.” 27 Then, taking a cup, he gave thanks and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you, 28 because this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 But I tell you: from now on I will no longer drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” 30 Then, after singing a psalm, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 31 Then Jesus said to them, “This night you will all stumble because of me, for it is written: ‘I will strike, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered’ (Zech. 13:7b).” 32 But after I am raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 33 Peter said to him, “Even if everyone is stumbled because of you, I will never be stumbled.” 34 Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” 35 Peter said to him, “Even if it is necessary to die with you, I will not deny you.” And all the disciples were saying the same. 36 Then Jesus came with them to a garden called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray.” 37 And taking Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him, he began to be sorrowful and distressed. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is sorrowful even to death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” 39 Then, going a little farther, he fell facedown, prayed, and said: “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me, yet not as I will, but as you will.” 40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, “So, could you not stay awake with me even one hour?” 41 Stay awake and pray, so that you do not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, a second time Jesus went away, prayed, and said: “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to pass away from Me, then I will drink it. Let Your will be done.” 43 He came again and found them sleeping, because their eyes had become heavy. 44 He left them and went away a third time, and prayed, and again said the same words. 45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them: “Sleep from now on and rest, for now, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is being handed over into the hands of sinners.” 46 Get up, let us go. Look, the one who is going to betray me has arrived.” 47 While Jesus was still speaking these things, now, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the one betraying Jesus had given them a sign, saying, “The one I kiss is the one. arrest him.” 49 He immediately came up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Teacher,” and kissed Him. 50 Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you came for.” Then they came up, seized Jesus, and arrested Him. 51 and now, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand, drew his sword, and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back in its place, because all who take up the sword will fall by the sword.” 53 Or do you think that I cannot plead with my Father, and that right now he would send to me more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But how then will the Scripture be fulfilled, that it must be so?” 55 At that time Jesus said to the crowd, “Have you come out against me with swords and clubs as against a robber, to arrest me? Every day I was sitting in the temple and teaching, and you did not arrest me.” 56 But all this happened so that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled. 57 And those who arrested Jesus led him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered. 58 Peter followed him from a distance as far as the high priest’s courtyard, and after going in, he sat with the servants to see what would happen. 59 But the chief priests and the whole council were seeking false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put him to death. 60 And they were not finding any, although many false witnesses had come. At last two false witnesses came forward. 61 and they said, “This man was saying, ‘I am able to tear down the temple of God and build it in three days.’” 62 The high priest stood up and said to him, “Do you answer nothing? What is it that these testify against you?” 63 Jesus remained silent. The high priest addressed him and said, “I put you under oath by the living God to tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God.” 64 Jesus answered him and said, “You have said it. But I tell you: from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven (Dan. 7:13, Matt. 24:30b).” 65 Then the high priest tore his garments and said, “He has blasphemed. What further witnesses do we need? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy.” 66 What do you think? They answered and said, "He is deserving of death." 67 Then they spat in his face and struck him with their fists. And some slapped him. 68 and they said, “Prophesy to us, Christ: who is the one who struck you?” 69 Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl came up to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before them all and said, “I do not know what you are talking about.” 71 As he was going out to the gate, another woman saw him and said to those standing there, «This man also was with Jesus the Nazarene». 72 Peter again denied it with an oath: “I do not know that man.” 73 A little later, those standing there came up and said to Peter, “Truly you also are one of them, for your speech also gives you away.” 74 Then Peter began to curse and to swear: “I do not know that man.” And immediately the rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And going out, he wept bitterly.
