At that time Jesus said to the crowd, “Have you come out against me with swords and clubs as against a robber, to arrest me? Every day I was sitting in the temple and teaching, and you did not arrest me.”
In these words Jesus addresses the crowd, exposing the injustice of their actions and their false piety. He shows that His arrest is not the result of justice, but of fear and darkness. “Have you come out with swords and clubs as against a robber?” is not a self-defensive complaint, but a spiritual verdict that lays bare their hypocrisy. Christ reminds them that His ministry was always open: He “sat and taught in the temple,” plainly, without fear. Yet they did not arrest Him in the light, but came at night, under the sign of darkness, because sin always works under cover of darkness. Jesus reminds them that the true criminal is not He who acts in the light, but those who are afraid of the light.
