In this verse the story of the human conspiracy against Jesus begins. The chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people—the religious and political leaders of Israel—gather with one purpose: not to establish justice, but to destroy Christ. The house of Caiaphas, which should have been a symbol of the law and holiness, now becomes the place of an evil council. This highlights the contrast of the story: the very people who should have led the people to the truth are planning to kill the embodiment of Truth—Christ. These words also reveal the deep meaning of divine judgment: when a person refuses God’s light, even outward holiness can become an instrument of darkness. Christ does not stop this council, because it becomes a necessary part of His saving plan.
