Then the high priest tore his garments and said, “He has blasphemed. What further witnesses do we need? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy.”
This verse shows how the word of truth becomes a cause of condemnation for a blind soul. When Jesus affirms His divine identity, the high priest, instead of recognizing it, responds with a formal gesture of blasphemy by tearing his garments. In the Old Testament, the tearing of garments meant deep grief or mourning (Gen. 37:34), but here it becomes a sign of hypocrisy: the high priest pretends to be one who mourns divine wrath, while in his heart he pronounces a sentence of death. His words, “He has blasphemed. What further need do we have of witnesses?” reveal the injustice of the entire trial: they were not seeking the truth, but an occasion to justify their pre-decided accusation.
