Again, a second time Jesus went away, prayed, and said: “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to pass away from Me, then I will drink it. Let Your will be done.”
This prayer profoundly expresses the mystery of Christ’s obedience to the will of the Lord God. If in the first prayer He asked that the cup, if possible, might pass away, then in the second He already submits absolutely, saying, “Let your will be done.” This is the highest spiritual moment, when the incarnate Christ willingly accepts the way of the cross without resistance. The words “If it is not possible for this cup to pass from me” show not wavering toward God’s will, but full awareness that the work of salvation requires a sacrifice. “I will drink it” means that He accepts the suffering completely, to the very end. This prayer in Gethsemane confirms Christ’s twofold nature: as man He feels the pain, but as the Son of God He obeys with boundless love. This prayer becomes an example for all believers: when in life pain and trial cannot pass, the believer is called not to fight against it, but to say, “Let your will be done.” Those words do not mean resigning oneself to pain, but trusting and relying on God.
