The high priest stood up and said to him, “Do you answer nothing? What is it that these testify against you?”
This statement presents one of the strongest and most tense moments of the trial: the high priest, presenting himself as a defender of the law, in reality appears as an accuser. His question, “Do you answer nothing?”, at first glance seems like the words of a just judge, but in fact it is filled with a predetermined accusation. The high priest was expecting not an explanation, but a pretext by which to declare Jesus guilty. Yet Christ’s silence becomes the most powerful answer in this false trial. He is silent not out of weakness, but because the truth has no need to defend itself from a lie; here silence speaks louder than any words. By Jesus’ silence the prophecy of Isaiah is also fulfilled: “He was led like a sheep to be slaughtered, and like a lamb standing silent before the one who shears it, so he does not open his mouth.” (Isaiah 53:7). This moment reveals divine patience, as Jesus accepts people’s accusation without answering back, in order to save sinners.
