He came again and found them sleeping, because their eyes had become heavy.
This verse shows a person’s spiritual weakness, even at the moment when the greatest mystery of salvation is being accomplished beside him. Christ returns a second time from prayer, full of spiritual anguish, and the disciples were asleep again. Their “eyes had grown heavy” not only from physical weariness, but as a sign of spiritual sleep: they are unable to keep pace with the depth of the Lord’s prayer and pain. What Jesus was experiencing as the Lamb of God was beyond human strength. Yet His return to the disciples testifies to boundless patience: He knows their weakness, but He does not reject their presence. The phrase “their eyes had grown heavy” also reminds believers of all times that spiritual sleep comes unnoticed—gently, in a natural way—and in the end deprives a person of the sense of God’s presence. This word is a call to remain watchful, because closeness with Christ cannot be preserved without spiritual wakefulness.
