The people of His hometown reject Christ. He gives His disciples authority to cast out demons. They think that He is John the Baptist, who has risen from the dead. The miracle of the five loaves and two fish. Christ walks on the lake and heals many sick people.

1 And going out from there, He came to His hometown. His disciples were following Him. 2 And when the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many, hearing Him, were astonished and said, “Where did this Man get these things, and what wisdom has been given to Him, that such mighty works are done by His hand? 3 Is this not the carpenter’s son, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are His sisters not here with us?” And they were offended because of Him. 4 And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his homeland, among his relatives, and in his house.” 5 And there He could not do any mighty work, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 He was amazed at their unbelief. And He went around the villages and taught. 7 And He called the twelve to Himself and began to send them out two by two, and He gave them authority over unclean spirits. 8 And He commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff: neither a bag, nor bread, nor money in their belts, 9 but to wear only sandals, and not to put on two tunics. 10 And He was saying to them, “Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave from there. 11 And wherever they do not receive you and do not listen to you, when you leave there, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them. Truly I tell you, for Sodom and Gomorrah it will be easier on the day of judgment than for that city.” 12 The disciples went out and were preaching that people should repent. 13 And they were casting out many demons, and they were anointing many sick people with oil and healing them. 14 And King Herod heard these things, for the name of Jesus had become known, and he said, “John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and for this reason mighty works are being done through him.” 15 Others were saying, “He is Elijah,” and others, “He is a prophet, or one like the prophets.” 16 But when Herod heard, he said, “It is John, whom I beheaded. He has risen from the dead.” 17 For Herod himself had sent men and arrested John, bound him and imprisoned him because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. For Herod had made her his wife, 18 for John was saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to take your brother’s wife as your wife.” 19 And Herodias held a grudge against John and wanted to kill him, but she could not. 20 For Herod was afraid of John, because he knew him as a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. and when he listened to him, he did many things, and he listened to him gladly. 21 And an opportune day came, when Herod, on the occasion of his birthday, gave a dinner for his officials, the commanders of thousands, and the leading men of Galilee. 22 When the daughter of Herodias came in and began to dance, she pleased Herod and those reclining at the table with him. And the king said to the girl, “Ask of me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.” 23 And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give you, even up to half of my kingdom.” 24 The girl went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25 And she quickly went in to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once, right now, on a platter, the head of John the Baptist.” 26 And the king was deeply grieved, but because of his oaths and those who sat at the table with him, he could not refuse her. 27 And the king immediately sent an executioner and commanded him to bring his head. 28 And the executioner went and beheaded John in the prison, and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 And when his disciples heard, they came, took his body, and laid it in a tomb. 30 And the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him everything they had done and taught. 31 Jesus said to them, “Come by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a little.” For those coming and those going were so many that they did not even have time to eat bread. 32 And they withdrew by boat to a deserted place by themselves. 33 People saw them going, and many recognized them. And running there from all the towns, they arrived ahead of them together and gathered around Him. 34 And Jesus, coming out, saw a great crowd and had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And He began to teach them many things. 35 When enough time had passed, the disciples came to Jesus and said, “This is a deserted place, and the day has not yet grown dark, 36 send this crowd away, so that they may go to the surrounding farms and villages and buy food for themselves, because they have nothing to eat here.”։۔ 37 But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they asked Him, “Should we go and buy bread for two hundred denarii and give it to them to eat?” 38 And He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they found out, they said, “Five loaves and two fish.” 39 And He commanded them to have everyone sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 And they sat down in groups, in places by hundreds, and in places also by fifties. 41 Then Jesus, taking the five loaves and the two fish, lifted His eyes to heaven, blessed, broke the loaves into pieces, and gave them to the disciples to distribute to them. and He divided the two fish among all. 42 And they all ate and were satisfied. 43 They gathered twelve full baskets of pieces of bread, and also from the fish. 44 And those who ate were five thousand men. 45 Then Jesus immediately urged the disciples to get into the boat and go on ahead of Him to the other side of the lake, toward Bethsaida, while He dismissed the crowd. 46 And after bidding them farewell, He went up the mountain to pray. 47 And when evening came, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and He was alone on the land. 48 And He saw that the disciples were being battered as they rowed, because the wind was blowing against them. In the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the lake, and He intended to pass by them. 49 But when they saw Him walking on the lake, they thought He was a ghost, and they cried out. 50 For they all saw Him and were afraid. But He immediately spoke with them and said, “Take courage, it is I. do not be afraid.” 51 Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were exceedingly amazed within themselves and were stunned with astonishment. 52 For they had not understood what had happened with the loaves, because their heart was hardened. 53 And crossing over to the other side of the lake, they came to the land of Gennesaret and went ashore. 54 And when they came out of the boat, the people immediately recognized Jesus. 55 Running about throughout that whole region, they began to carry the sick on beds to wherever they heard Jesus was. 56 And wherever He entered—villages, cities, or farms—they would lay the sick in the marketplaces and beg Him that they might touch even the edge of His garment. And as many as touched Him were healed.
