And He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they found out, they said, “Five loaves and two fish.”
Christ did not begin to act without taking into account what they had. He asks, how many loaves do you have? This is an important lesson. Though what we have is often small, the Lord wants us to bring it before Him. He also says, “go and see,” so that they would recognize the limitation of what they had. The five loaves and the two fish were absolutely not enough for such a great crowd, but the Lord wanted that very little to be placed in His hand. This verse teaches us that God does not despise small beginnings. He wants us to bring to Him the little we have—our time, strength, resources, and faith—and to trust Him even when the result is not yet seen.
