but to wear only sandals, and not to put on two tunics.
This command continues the same thought: simplicity, humility, and reliance on God. The disciples were not to take unnecessary items with them, not even a spare cloak. In this way their journey would testify that they were not going to secure their own comfort or to stand out by outward appearance, but were sent for service. What was given to them was enough for the road, and in everything else they were to learn to trust God. Refusing a second cloak showed that their attention should be focused not on provisions, but on the ministry entrusted to them. In this way their service remained simple and sincere, without unnecessary burden, and was wholly directed to proclaiming the message of God.
