Jesus said to them, “Come by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a little.” For those coming and those going were so many that they did not even have time to eat bread.
Christ cares not only for the disciples’ ministry, but also for overcoming their physical weakness. He says that they should rest a little. This shows His gentle and wise care. He does not demand unceasing labor without pause, but acknowledges the bodily limits of man. Ministry is a great honor, yet it does not remove the truth that man is created with a need for rest as well. There were so many coming and going that they did not even have time to eat bread. This shows the strain of ministry and the great flow of people toward Jesus. But the Lord knew that an exhausted servant cannot be useful for a long time. In this way He teaches balance: zeal in ministry and obedience to the necessity of rest. At the same time, this invitation also means being alone with Him, so that rest becomes not only physical recovery, but also spiritual renewal in the Lord’s presence.
